Torah Reading for Week of Feb 24-Mar 2, 2013 – Adar 14-20, 5773

And HASHEM said to Moshe, “I have seen the nation and they are a stiff-necked nation.” (Shemos 32:9)

A stiff-necked nation: They turn the back of their neck to the one rebuking them and they refuse to listen. (Rashi)
Several times – including in this week’s portion (Deut. 9:6) – the Torah calls Israel am k’shei-oref, a stiff-necked people. In today’s idiom “stiff-necked” means intransigent, unbending, rigid, can’t be budged, impossible to move.

On the one hand, Rashi and Sforno note that one who is stiff-necked cannot turn his face to the left or right. He is inflexible and therefore unwilling to consider different points of view. “They turn the stiff back of their necks toward those who would rebuke them and refuse to listen” (Rashi on Exodus 34:9). “Hence there is no hope that they will repent, but follow the stubbornness of their hearts as before” (Sforno on Exodus 32:9). After the building of the Golden Calf, God refers to the People Israel as am k’shei oref. Despite the warnings and rebukes from Moses and the prophets who follow, this stiff-necked people is not faithful to its God. The people are susceptible to idolatry and too stubborn to change their ways.

Commenting on am k’shei oref, Nachmanides agrees that being stiff-necked is a negative trait, but suggests that, nevertheless, it can earn positive results. He explains: “God is in their midst because they are a stiff-necked people” (Ramban on Exodus 34:9).

It is a negative trait for Jewish leaders to support anti Israel propagandaBernie Farber the former CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress recently sent out a tweet supporting a meeting held by JSpace.  At the meeting, the Jews present said that Israel practices a form of apartheid.  Two of the main speakers at this meeting serve  as adjudicators  for the Dispute Resolution  Committee for Pride Toronto.  And Bernie Farber wants the Jewish Community to place it’s faith in this sham of a process.  When Jewish leaders accuse Israel of Apartheid, this only gives more energy to those that promote Israel Apartheid Week.  Bernie Farber gives a green light to IAW.  The Ninth Annual Israeli Apartheid Week March 1 – 10, 2013 www.apartheidweek.org

2013 ISRAEL TRUTH WEEK CONFERENCE, Hamilton, ON, Canada, March 5-6

One of the key objectives of the Israel Truth Week concept is to unite Jewish and non-Jewish groups in defence of Israel, and liberal values of freedom and equality here in Canada, to encourage co-operation despite differences of opinion or approach.
