Feds receive official application from Gitmo
Omar Khadr is seen in this undated handout photo.
OTTAWA – Public Safety Minister Vic Toews has received a formal transfer application in the case of convicted terrorist Omar Khadr.
If approved, Khadr would be transferred to Canada from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where’s he’s been in custody for about ten years.
“A decision will be made on this file in accordance with Canadian law,” Toews’ spokeswoman Julie Carmichael said on Wednesday.
A 2010 diplomatic note indicated Canada is “inclined to favourably consider” Khadr’s transfer from Guantanamo Bay, but the law still requires Toews to consider several factors, including whether Khadr would pose a security threat after arriving.
Khadr, 25, was born in Canada. He pleaded guilty in 2010 to murder and other terrorism-related charges after he admitted throwing a grenade that killed an American soldier during a firefight in Afghanistan in 2002.
