Parshah Beshalach – Exodus 13:17-17:16
Torah Reading for Week of January 9-15, 2011 – Shvat 4-10 5771

A defining moment of Jewish faith takes place on the shores of the Sea of Reeds, as the fleeing, fledgling nation is cornered into a quick and fateful decision. Trapped between raging waters and a raging Egyptian army, the nation had but few choices to make. Some froze in fright. Others wanted to run back to Egypt straight into the hands of their former tormentors. Others just prayed. Still others wanted to wage war against the former taskmasters.

Just imagine what you would do. But one group, led by Nachshon ben Aminadav forged ahead. Replacing fear with faith, he plunged into the sea because that was his understanding of what G-d demanded from the Jewish People. Only then did the sea split and the Jews cross. The Egyptians pursued. The waters returned, and the enemy was left bobbing in a sea of futility, totally vanquished under the turbulent waters.

In defining that moment of faith, the Torah tells us, “Israel saw the great hand that Hashem inflicted upon Egypt; and the people revered Hashem, and they had faith in Hashem and in Moses, His servant” (Exodus 14:31).

We are living in historic times. The Jewish State on the one hand is thriving. The economy is rock solid and the latest natural gas find will not only provide Israel with its energy needs for close to 100 years, but Israel will also be a major exporter of natural gas.

However, Israel still has many enemies. And Jewish leaders in diaspora have little or no backbone.

Let me give you an example. During my recent trip to Israel in early December, I met a European delegation of politicians, activists and bloggers from the so-called ‘far right’. One of the politicians, Mr. Strache is the leader of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPO). Mr. Strache attended a memorial ceremony at Yad Vashem and made it clear that the enemies of the Jewish People and Israel are also the enemies of Austria and he supports an Israel with defensible borders. Mr. Strache in the next election has a very good chance of being the new Chancellor of Austria, which would help change the anti Israel direction of the European Union. And there are many other politicians in other European Countries that also stand a chance of changing the European Union.

Recently Dr Ariel Musikant, the President of the Jewish Communities of Austria came out against the Austrian far right party FPO. Shortly thereafter, Israel Deputy Minister Ayoob Kara visted Vienna and praised individuals in this party as well as their political program. As a result Musikant wrote the following letter to PM Netanyahu.

Letter to Prime Minister Netanyahu from Musikant, Pres, Jewish Communities of Austria

To which Rabbi Yeshayahu Hollander, Member of the Nascent Sanhedrin, Member of the Jerusalem Court for Issues of Non-Jews and Founding Member of Ne’emnei Eretz Israel, replied.

Open Letter to Dr Ariel Musikant from Rabbi Hollander

…….” The members of right wing parties who came to visit Israel and met with Mr. Kara, including Mr. Strache, who Mr. Kara visited in Austria, have declared and given reason to believe that they are not anti-Semites. Whether some were anti-Semites in the past seems to be debateable. But what is important now is not the past but the present and the future. These people who are ready and willing to fight the purpose of radical Islam to conquer Europe are precious allies to Israel and to European Jews. So it is in the best interest of your community, also, Dr. Musikant, that you cool your anger towards Mr. Kara and towards Mr. Netanyahu, and carefully consider where are the vital interests of the Jewish community in Austria and of the Jewish communities in Europe.”……..

The Jewish Defence League will follow the words of this saintly Rabbi. And we will build bridges with all groups that are willing to stand up to political Islam.

The JDL hosted an evening with the leader of the English Defence League. The event went on as planned. Everything was peaceful inside the hall. A collection of anti-Israel groups gathered outside the Zionist Center to block cars from coming to the event.

The anti-Israel groups came with sticks and swung them at the police. Tragically, one police officer was taken to the hospital with broken ribs. The police then cleared this violent anti-Israel gang away. And the JDL worked together with the police to keep the event peaceful.

Unfortunately, some of the leaders of the Canadian Jewish Congress made false statements that the JDL contributed to the violence. THIS IS A BLATANT LIE. This is one sample example of the false statements reported in the Toronto Sun

………”Those attending the indoor rally at the Toronto Zionist Centre, near Lawrence Ave. and the Allen Expwy., were met by others opposing it outside. Like two weather fronts, they came together violently, despite a reported eight mounted police keeping them apart. At least two arrests were made, one police officer was injured and a squad car was vandalized.”……….

The truth is that the anti-Israel gang came ready to fight with weapons and they fought with police. And the JDL kept to the letter of the law as we fully cooperated with the police.

The second outrageous statement is,

…….”Swap the word “Muslim” for “Jewish,” and the EDL’s actions sound instantly familiar to Jews everywhere. Throughout history, we’ve been demonized and made to feel like “the other.” We know this kind of hatred well, and condemn it unreservedly.” ……..

There is absolutely no similarity with Jewish history and Muslim history. At no time of history have Jews ever endorsed or carried out Terrorism against any government and at the same time advocated changing the law of the land to Jewish law. The Jews of Germany before the Holocaust wanted to only be loyal Germans. But the opposite is the case within a significant segment in the Islamic community.

There is support for Hamas and Hezbollah within the Islamic Community and there are people ready to commit acts of Terror against our government and the public. The truth is, within the Islamic community is deep hatred for Israel. In Malmo Sweden, the Jews live in fear from the Muslim community. And this is no secret. (Editor comment: Please read “Jewish Life in an Increasingly Muslim Europe” )

The fact is that this is a very deadly game that is being played by our leadership. The Jewish People will not find strong allies for our future within the Islamic community.

And the English Defence League is against militant Islam, Hamas and Hezbollah. They understand the threat and reality of today.

The Bay department stores across Canada have been targeted by boycotters for carrying AHAVA Beauty Products from Israel. The store has dropped the line and has agreed to boycott Israel. The Jewish Defence League will mount a campaign asking the public to boycott The Bay. The Campaign will include petitions, letters, phone calls, emails, posting on blogs and regular peaceful pickets. We will call on all supporters of Israel to Stand With Israel and shop somewhere else.
