And what, exactly, are Canadian taxpayers paying for?  That’s the question asked – and very illuminatingly answered – by a new documentary,This Hour Could Have 10,000 Minutes: The Biases of the CBC, produced by James Cohen and Fred Litwin.  (The title is a reference to “This Hour Has 22 Minutes,” a long-running CBC series specializing in political satire.)  Focusing on two main topics – anti-Israel bias and anti-conservative bias – the documentary consists almost entirely of CBC clips (most but not all of them from news programs) in which we can see these biases in action.  To judge by this compilation, the CBC is perhaps even more slanted than the infamously partial BBC – and, perhaps, even more brazen about it.

Take the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  In the documentary we see excerpts from a CBC report on the second Gaza “Freedom Flotilla” that consists entirely of interviews with flotilla participants – all of whom represent it as a virtuous and innocuous aid mission and condemn Israel’s actions against the previous flotilla as absolutely unjustified.  At no point does the CBC provide even a brief reminder that there is, in fact, another side to the story.  (As the documentary asks: “Is this reporting?  Or stenography?”)

In one report, the CBC describes the Jewish Defense League, untruthfully, as a terrorist group that’s banned in Canada.  In another report, on Hamas’s struggle with Fatah and takeover of Gaza, the CBC includes file footage of Israeli soldiers firing at terrorists – images that have nothing to do with the story in question.  In both cases, the CBC was compelled to issue on-air apologies. (This documentary, in fact, is packed with on-air apologies for this sort of thing.)

We’re shown a clip in which an interviewer lets nutty ex-Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, a 9/11 Truther, rant away about Israel – and doesn’t challenge her when she accuses Israel of committing a “massacre” of “unarmed humanitarian activists.” And we’re shown another clip in which the despicable George Galloway is treated with fawning respect by interviewer George Stroumboulopoulos, who describes him as being banned from Canada (he’s not) and who agrees with Galloway that it’s “ridiculous” to consider him a terrorist.  (To clarify this issue, the documentary makers show a clip from Arab TV in which Galloway is seen handing money over to Hamas – and bragging about it.)

Not only is the CBC systematically anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian.  Its journalists introduce Israel and Palestine into stories that are utterly unrelated to Israel and Palestine, comparing aggressors with Israel and victims with Palestinians, the more firmly to fix in viewers’ minds the notion that Israelis are, indeed, the incarnation of evil and Palestinians as pure as the driven snow.

In a story about Somalis fleeing from belligerent Islamists in North Africa, for example, a CBC reporter says that “the Somalis are becoming the Palestinians of Africa.” In a story about Egypt’s use of its emergency laws to quell uprisings, another CBC reporter, in an apparent effort to make Egypt’s actions sound less harsh, points out that “Israel has an emergency law too,” which he proceeds to describe at length – even though those laws have nothing whatsoever to do with the events he’s reporting on.

The CBC, as the documentary points out, “can use any story to show how awful Israel is.” In a report on the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the CBC manages to work in an absurd comparison between the Soviets’ wall and Israel’s security fence: “For some people, the Berlin anniversary is a reminder of their own divisions.  Today a group of Palestinian activists took down a slab of the security barrier that separates Israel and the West Bank.” (The report also describes the barrier as an “electronic fence,” which it isn’t.)

Cohen and Litwin don’t just take on CBC’s news programs.  On the CBC, as they tell us (and show us), “even the game shows have a political bias.”  On one such show, for example, contestants are asked: “Which city in Palestine is recognized to be a place of pilgrimage for Christians, Jews and Muslims?” Answer: Jerusalem.

Needless to say, a major staple of CBC programming is reflexive anti-Americanism.  The CBC regularly provides a forum to people who argue that Islamic violence is the fault of American foreign policy.  Republicans get especially disrespectful treatment: in one clip, CBC columnist Heather Mallick makes snide personal remarks about John McCain and calls Sarah Palin a “porn actress” type who appeals to “the white trash vote.”

The CBC is, of course, also hostile to Canada’s own Conservative Party.  The documentary showcases a shameless piece of trickery by the network, in which a clip of Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper is taken out of context to make it look as if he’s putting down Canada’s Muslim community.  After showing us the CBC version of Harper’s statement, Cohen and Litwin present us with the uncut version, which makes it clear that Harper was making a respectful comment about both Jews and Muslims.  On this occasion, too, the CBC was forced to apologize.

The CBC bias against the Conservatives manifests itself on all kinds of shows and in all kinds of ways.  In one clip, a weather girl makes snide remarks about Conservative policy.  On a comedy show, an actor imitating Harper wishes viewers “a happy gun-toting, anti-abortion, heterosexual new year.” Another “comedy” program actually includes a sketch in which the actors shoot at Harper and George W. Bush.  Skits mocking the left are few and far between.

We see a CBC interviewer giving Michael Moore a royal welcome, hailing him as a “right-wing bogeyman” and praising his “memorable Oscar acceptance speech.” (Moore repays the compliment, calling the CBC “a national treasure.”)  By contrast, when Ayaan Hirsi Ali expresses her love of America in an interview with Avi Lewis, he laughs at her with breathtaking condescension and accuses her of embracing pro-American clichés.  (She responds smoothly: “You grew up in freedom and you can spit on freedom.”)

In another clip, a CBC interviewer calls Hirsi Ali “right-wing,” to which Hirsi Ali, who’s promoting a book, replies: “What is right-wing about anything I have written in that book?” The interviewer doesn’t back off: if she isn’t right-wing, why has she taken a job at the American Enterprise Institute?  On the CBC, to be associated with any conservative institution is to be guilty of an offense that requires an explanation.

This Hour Could Have 10,000 Minutes was first shown in Ottawa last November and was followed by a panel discussion among several journalists and media critics.  That discussion is included on the DVD.  One of the panelists points out that CBC journalists are the upper class of the Canadian news media: for instance, they earn 39% more than their non-CBC colleagues, have larger camera crews, and are accorded a disproportionate amount of space in the parliamentary press gallery.  Another panelist notes that even though the CBC’s viewership numbers keep going down, its government subsidies continue to climb.

Canada is an important country – more important than many Americans realize, with an economy bigger than Russia’s and Spain’s – and the fact that Canadian taxpayers are shelling out good money to get slanted news matters.  For Canadians, a documentary like this one performs a valuable service, bringing together some of the more outrageous moments in recent CBC history and providing the corporation’s critics with a solid piece of ammunition.  For those of us living outside of Canada, the documentary is no less valuable, giving us an instructive dose of the kind of disinformation Canadians are fed every day – and helping us to understand, among other things, just why there’s so much knee-jerk contempt for the U.S. and Israel in America’s neighbor to the north.

It’s not our brightest hour. The events unfolding in Israel today should be terribly upsetting to any Jew who cares about his or her faith and nationhood. Whenever Jews rise against each other, as is occurring today in the quiet town of Beit Shemesh between Haredi extremists and the rest of the country – religious and secular Jews alike – no one wins.

 

The recent events revolve around a cadre of religious extremists who view other Orthodox Jews in their neighborhood as being insufficiently Orthodox. When 8-year old Na’ama Margolese was walking to school one day, she was spat at and called “shiksa.” Na’ama’s school espouses a religious Zionist ideology, and the girls who attend, while modestly dressed, are deemed too modern in their appearance. Even an 8-year old girl, apparently, can be a temptation to a “healthy” Jewish man who has too much time on his hands.

 

This ideological battle taking place thousands of miles away from Toronto is deeply personal. Na’ama’s grandparents are proud members of the Thornhill Jewish community, and her father, Benjy Margolese, grew up here before living the dream of making aliyah. Na’ama could therefore be the daughter or granddaughter of any of us, and we should connect to her accordingly.

 

Sadly, this is not the first time that religious extremists have distorted and misappropriated the beautiful teachings of our Torah. The Babylonian Talmud records a frightening story of a religion gone haywire, right around the beginning of the Common Era, just a generation or two before the destruction of the Herodian Temple in Jerusalem. By that time, religious anarchy prevailed even in the holiest of places. Two overly zealous Kohanim (priests in charge of the Temple service) were vying to perform a certain sacrificial service. They both ran up the ramp of the altar at the same time, each hoping to reach the top first. When one Kohen noted that the other was about to overtake him, he withdrew a dagger from his cloak and stabbed the other Kohen in the chest. The victim crumpled to the floor and the onlookers were aghast at the depravity that their religion had reached.

 

But the story doesn’t end there. The poor stabbed Kohen had been joined that day by his father for Temple service. After witnessing what had happened, the father then noticed that his son’s body was still quivering. “Quick!” he shouted. “Remove the dagger from my son’s body while he’s still alive, lest it become ritually defiled from being in contact with a corpse!” This, the Talmud concludes, indicates that the religious sensibilities of that generation were more focused on ritual impurity than murder.

 

Sadly, Jewish history is rich with similar lessons. If there’s anything we’ve learned from the subsequent destruction of the Temple, it’s that whenever our religion cares more about ritual than it does about our fellow Jews, destruction can’t be far behind. When one can justify terrorizing little girls in the name of “tznius” (modesty of dress), when what goes into one’s mouth is more important than what comes out of it, when we care more about preserving our own spirituality than ruining the spirituality of others, then we have distorted Judaism beyond recognition. That we haven’t learned from our past mistakes makes the events of the past few days doubly tragic.

 

Two more aspects of the events currently unfolding must be underscored. One is the horrible distortion of misogyny and gender discrimination that is being justified under the pretense of religion. Many communities have advocated for separate seating on their bus lines. I feel that every religious community has rights of religious self-determination, provided that they are not at others’ expense. If the Haredi men of Beit Shemesh or any other community feel that sitting next to women on a public bus may lead them to sin, then it is their prerogative to institute separate seating. But they should sit at the back of the bus. Our tradition has always stressed the importance of placing the Jewish woman on a pedestal. The Talmud states that a man has the duty to show more honor to his wife than to himself. It’s time our brethren in Israel are taught a lesson or two about Jewish chivalry. Hold the door open for your wife, and give your seat at the front of the bus to a Jewish lady.

 

Secondly, religious extremists are starting to feel the heat of their unpopular radicalism. While the wiser among them are retreating, some truly foolish individuals have chosen to stage demonstrations, portraying themselves as abused and misunderstood victims of the evil government of Israel which seeks to strip them of their rights to religious expression. Some have gone so far as to dress their children in Holocaust victim regalia at these demonstrations, yellow star and all. To desecrate the sacred icon of our parents’ and grandparents’ suffering by exploiting it for political gain is what we would expect of Palestinians and other enemies of the Jewish people. I have no doubt that the grandparents of these very same “pious” Haredim are rolling over in their graves.

 

So what is there for us to do? Wring our hands and blow off steam? No. This culture of religious distortion was not created in a vacuum. Religious observance has been gauged by certain communities and individuals for decades by how strict one is in the minutiae of ritual observance instead of how one accords dignity and kindness to one’s fellow human being. All of us, both in Israel and abroad, have the religious duty to counteract this horrible distortion by proclaiming loudly, “I am proud to be a religious Jew. I choose to lead my life following the traditions and laws of the Torah. But my real religiosity lies not in how long my or my wife’s hem line is, but rather how I emulate my Creator in showing love and kindness to all of God’s creatures.” Kiddush Hashem, sanctifying God’s name, is the only remedy for Hillul Hashem, a desecration of God and what His religion represents.

 

If our message is loud enough, perhaps we can drown out the extremists’ distorted message. We’ll truly have something to be proud of when that day comes.

While pundits at opposite ends of the political spectrum seldom agree, many seem to have reached accord over recent Obama administration deviations from constitutional principles.  The conclusion on both sides: the United States is moving precariously away from its origins as a constitutional republic and toward repressive government control of many aspects of life.

These changes, sparked perhaps by 9/11, are nonetheless uncharacteristic of a free society.  In a free state, access to information is unrestricted, freedom of speech by individuals and the press is upheld, dissent is lawful, and the opinions and attitudes of citizens toward government and law enforcement do not spur investigations.  Further, surveillance and investigations are limited to planned or actual criminal activity, due process is honored, and unreasonable search and seizure by government agents is unacceptable absent probable cause. 

Yet, since Obama assumed the presidency in 2009, he has sought and/or instituted policies that consolidate power at the federal level, restrict the availability of information, extend the boundaries of protected speech, expand monitoring of American society and increase law enforcement’s role.  Just as policies that place limitations on government oversight advance the cause of freedom, the opposite is true: policies that expand the role of government stifle liberty and invite repression.  A sampling of some proposed and/or established policies of the Obama administration indicates a troubling move toward a more restrictive, autocratic government.

 

Executive Order Empowering Interpol

On December 16, 2009, Obama officially altered President Reagan’s 1983 Executive Order 12425 (EO 12425) to give Interpol, the policing arm of the International Criminal Court (ICC), carte blanche to operate with impunity on American soil.  This was in contravention of restrictions put in place by Reagan to hold the international police force accountable for its actions, not unlike American law enforcement agencies, and to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution as the highest form of law in the United States.

Instead, Obama placed Interpol, whose past presidents have included members of the Nazi SS, beyond the reach of law enforcement, the FBI, and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.  By signing EO 12425, Obama made all Interpol property and assets immune from search, discovery, and confiscation, affording no recourse or protection for American citizens from Interpol abuse.  Thus, with Interpol above the U.S. Constitution and American law enforcement authority, U.S. citizens on American soil could potentially be secretly arrested.  At a time when Islamic terrorist detainees are entitled to due process, Americans arrested by Interpol could conceivably be denied access to documents sought during the discovery process.

Curiously, the United States is not an ICC partner.  In 2002, to safeguard U.S. armed forces in Afghanistan and Iraq from politically manufactured “war crimes” charges and actions, President George W. Bush removed the U.S. signature to the 1998 Rome Treaty, which created the ICC, and overturned President Clinton’s signing in 2000.  Still, Interpol, serving as a liaison among its 190 member states, operates within the U.S. Department of Justice through the auspices of local police departments. 

DHS Report on “Right-Wing Extremism”

In 2009, Obama’s Department of Homeland Security issued the report “Right-wing Extremism:  Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.”  Previously, the DHS focused on specific groups engaged in violent acts.  This report, however, was not based on actions or incidents perpetrated by any groups; instead, it identified the “economic downturn” as a potential catalyst for future right-wing extremist action.

Absent any actual evidence or statistics, the report cited the prospect of a “resurgence in rightwing extremist recruitment and radicalization.”  This assertion was based on the expression of dismay by conservative groups about the government’s departure from traditional American values, the curtailment of Second-Amendment rights, and the loss of U.S. status as a global power, as well as conservative opposition to publicly funded abortions, equal status for homosexual marriages, citizenship and government assistance for illegal immigrants, and other issues.

In light of recent activities by the radical left-wing Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement, the focus of the DHS report seems ironically misplaced.  The participation in OWS by radical Muslim groups, the Nazi Party, the Communist Party, the Ku Klux Klan, and a collection of left-wing extremist organizations created a level of anarchy that led to violence, sexual assaults, pilfering, spread of disease, child abuse, and other dangerous and depraved behavior.  The White House, Democratic politicians like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the unions, and Hollywood celebrities have all embraced this licentious movement while tarring and feathering the orderly, focused, and respectful TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party activists who operate within the confines of the law to lobby for lower taxes and smaller government.  With the OWS movement record of close to 6,000 arrests, public defecations — including on police cars and in banks — the terrorizing of businesses and motorists, attacks on police, public masturbation, illegal drug use, the pimping of children as well as the use of children as human shields, and other depravities, the DHS effort seems like a politically motivated, misguided witch hunt.

Access to Information

In October, the Department of Justice (DOJ) proposed revised FOIA rules to allow federal agencies to lie about the existence of documents to those seeking certain sensitive records.  This revision, withdrawn due to public outcry, would have permitted government agencies to deviate from the current policy under which they must cite a relevant reason or exemption from releasing documents, thus providing an arguable legal basis for the denied party to pursue in court.  Had the proposed FOIA revision gone through and the very existence of information been denied, the possibility of a lawsuit would have been removed as a potential avenue for obtaining the requested data.  

Former federal Justice Department attorney J. Christian Adams exposes more about the radical agenda of the Obama Justice Department in his recent bookInjustice.  Adams writes that the DOJ logs clearly indicate a liberal bias in responses to FOIA requests.  Right-leaning FOIA requestors receive no reply or endure lengthy wait times — from four to six months — while left-leaning FOIA requestors typically receive information within three days.

Meanwhile, federal agencies, who work closely with the Muslim Brotherhood, have been sanitizing counterterrorism training programs for federal and local law enforcement to exclude references to Islamic terrorism and to marginalize and defame recognized experts on Islamic doctrine.  All official materials that expose the truth about jihad have been censored in favor of generic information on “violent extremism.”  Telling the truth about Islamic ideology and accurately examining the contents of Islamic doctrine (even as explained by esteemed Muslim clerics) is now redefined as Islamophobic or hate speech.  These revised programs hide the truth about jihad in Islam and liken an entrenched 1,400-year-old supremacist ideology to the battle against gangs and drugs.

Further, the U.S. Army recently published a “cultural literacy” handbook for soldiers.  This new publication whitewashes jihad, calling it the “communal military defense of Islam and Muslims when they are threatened or under attack.”  Jihad is also explained as “an everyday spiritual and moral struggle to live a life submitted to G-d” or “the attempt to spread Islam by education and example.”  This shamefully irresponsible misrepresentation of Islamic doctrine condemns American soldiers serving in Muslim countries to ignorance with potentially deadly consequences.  It represents yet another way the U.S. government under Obama is controlling information content and access.

Monitoring Speech

The Obama administration has given the Department of Homeland Security the power to monitor the social media activities and online networking platforms of journalists and to retain the data for up to five years.  In other words, the federal government is setting a dangerous precedent with serious First Amendment implications by using taxpayer dollars in the surveillance of those who write news for the public.  Any reporter from anchor to blogger can be scrutinized under the current regulations.  Since 2010, the DHS has monitored popular websites, including news, social media, blogs, forums, and message boards.  Two recently proposed bills — the Stop Online Privacy Act and the Protect IP Act — could potentially give the DOJ broad new powers to police the internet.

UNHRC – Istanbul Process

Last month, the United States approved adoption of the U.N. Human Rights Commission (UNHRC)’s Resolution 16/18, an initiative of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a confederacy of 57 Islamic states.  The OIC has long endeavored to limit speech that defames religion, and Islam in particular.  This resolution, initially proposed to stem alleged but virtually nonexistent discrimination of Muslims post-9/11, places limitations on critical speech, which is protected by the U.S. Constitution.  Resolution 16/18 includes measures to criminalize “incitement to imminent violence based on religion or belief” but doesn’t specify who decides what constitutes “imminent violence” and whose violence is punishable.  It also fails to address the persecution of Jews and Christians in Muslim countries and the prevention of the horrific Muslim killing sprees that followed the publication of the Mohammed cartoons and the Koran-burnings, both legally protected activities under the First Amendment.

As part of his entreaty for the passage of the Resolution 16/18, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the Turkish Muslim head of the OIC, issued a veiled threat implying that the failure to act against religious “hate speech” would result in acts of Islamic terrorism.  It appears that the overriding purpose of the resolution is to limit and criminalize criticism of Islam.  The resolution also would place the blame for terrorist attacks on its victims for their non-compliance with Islamic doctrine or sharia, which prohibits criticism of Islam under threat of death.  The UNHRC resolution contains a measure to counter religious profiling which could hamper American law enforcement efforts to apprehend Islamic terrorists.  It is indeed alarming that the Obama administration would entertain a policy that clearly places limits on free speech and imposes de facto sharia.

In all the examples detailed above, Obama is signaling a significant departure from our founding constitutional principles.  If this represents a slippery slope toward an increasingly authoritarian regime in America, only time will tell.  But we would be wise to head the words of Thomas Jefferson, our nation’s third president and the  author of the Declaration of Independence:  “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”  Americans would be remiss to fail in vigilance and ignore these alarming trends.

Eyes in Gaza – Mads Gilbert speaks at Ryerson

Mads Gilbert is an internationally acclaimed doctor and is Head of the
Department of Emergency at the University of North Norway.

Gilbert was one of only two foreign doctors allowed into Gaza during the
2008-2009 Israeli incursion. Along with his colleague, Erik Fosse, he
co-authored a book titled Eyes in Gaza in which he recounts the horrific scenes he
witnessed in Gaza’s Al Shifa hospital during the deadly 22-day Israeli attack on the
civilian population of Gaza.

Long before ‘Operation Cast Lead’ Israel had imposed a severe blockade on Gaza which
included but was not limited to the movement of goods, medical aid, and people. At
the onset of the incursion, Israel banned all media from entering the strip and soon
Mads Gilbert became an unofficial spokesperson for the atrocities that were
taking place against the civilian population. He appeared on Al Jazeera, BBC, CBS,
ABC, CNN and other news networks to tell the story of the Palestinians in the winter
of 2008-2009.

The 3-week incursion on Gaza cost 1400 civilian lives, in addition to severe damage
to the Gazan economy – by UN estimates, 85% of Gaza’s GDP was slashed by the end of
the attacks. Dr. Mads Gilbert will share with the Toronto community his eyewitness
accounts of the terror that was cast on the civilian population during those deadly
22 days.
