Parshah Vayakhel - Exodus 35:1-38:20
Torah Reading for Week of February 20-26, 2011 – Adar I 16-22 5771
“Six days you can work, but the seventh day must be holy to you, a Sabbath of strict rest to God.” (Shemos 35:2)
A central theme in this weeks Parsha is the concept of time. Moses told the Jewish People to give generously to enable the building of the Tabernacle. And there was a point in time that Moses said, ‘Enough’. There were some people that waited, but it was too late. Everyone that gave had a glow of satisfaction that they made a major contribution to the building of the Tabernacle. And those people were able to appreciate the meaning of time and the purpose to dedicate the Shabbat to G-d.
Without an understanding of time, a Jew will not appreciate the Shabbat. It is not just a time to relax from work. Rather it is a time to reflect on our contribution to making this world a better place. Did we give of ourselves during the week? It is on the Shabbat that we have the opportunity to recharge our inner self through reflection, so that the next week will be much more focused. And that is precisely what we as a people must be, a holy, stronger, determined and more focused people.
